Social Workers (SWs) are vital members of the multidisciplinary health care teams at Hemophilia Treatment Centers (HTCs) across the US. However, little research has been done to identify the demographics and qualifications of HTC SWs. In response to this lack of data, a subcommittee from the Social Work Working Group sponsored by the National Hemophilia Foundation conducted a national online survey in 2010. The authors attempted to ascertain the demographics and characteristics of SWs who work at HTCs across the country. The purpose of this article is to report the results of this online survey and evaluate the parameters of SW demographics in HTCs. Electronic surveys were sent to 143 HTC SWs. Ten were excluded and 100 were completed and returned, yielding a 75% response rate. The great majority of HTC SWs are women and almost half are middle-aged (aged 40-59). They represent a highly educated, very experienced group of professionals. When asked why respondents stayed in their positions at the HTCs, answers appeared to highly correlate to factors related to the HTC multidisciplinary team model. The high survey response rate of 75% reflects the interest of HTC SWs in obtaining data that describe and quantify their qualifications. This information may serve as validation of the haemophilia SW role in times of funding cuts. It may also give a basis for the recruitment and retention of SWs in the haemophilia field.

Summary: The main purpose of the current study was to assess whether there are significant differences among variables, such as social workers’ familiarity with the crisis intervention model, receiving up-to-date information about the latest developments in COVID-19, having adequate information about what the symptoms of COVID-19 are, and willingness to work with COVID-19 patients, and social workers’ ability to apply the crisis intervention model when they are working with clients and its three sub-scales (assessing and identifying the problem, establishing a relationship, and formulating an action plan). The cross-sectional survey method was used to conduct the sample of the study. The sample (N = 274) used in the study consisted of social workers in Kuwait.Findings: The results showed that CIS is valid and reliable and can be trusted to measure levels according to the purpose of the study. Analysis using T-test showed significant relationships between the CIS and study’s variables at p < .05. Application: This study would help to raise the knowledge and awareness about the ability of social workers to apply the crisis intervention model during COVID-19 pandemic when they are working with clients and what variables may be associated with it.

Mainly in response to the policy drive to avoid unnecessary acute hospital admissions and delayed discharge on social grounds, there has been a gradual development of social work services attached to emergency departments (EDs) in the UK. In the absence of a clearly articulated evidence base or debate about the roles of ED attached social workers, a model of ED based social work practice and indicative supporting evidence is presented. It is argued that social workers may be able to contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of hospital services while providing a key point of access to social care services. A number of obstacles remain to the implementation of this model of service, including the narrow focus of current social care practice, the hours that a social work service is normally provided, chronic under-funding, and continuing perverse incentives in the health and social care system. More systematic evidence in the UK context is needed to support the case for change.

The study aimed to know the role of psychological stress in the performance of social workers in Al-Amal mental health complexes in the northern border region. In order to achieve this goal, a two-part questionnaire was designed. The first part included demographic and social information, while the second part formed of five axes (anxiety Depression, mental health, handicaps and the role of mental health management). The sample consisted of eighty-five subjects. The results of the study showed the following: - There are statistically significant differences according to the effect of social pressures, according to the family's support among social workers at Al-Amal Complex for Mental Health in the northern region. - There are statistically significant differences according to the effect of economic pressures according to the income level of the social workers in Al-Amal Complex for Mental Health in the northern region. - There are statistically significant differences according to the effect of psychological stress on social workers in Al-Amal Complex for Mental Health in the northern region, according to psychological rigidity.

How and when workers exercise these various options influences the strength of colony social organization. Halictus sexcinctus exhibits highly polymorphic social behaviour, with solitary colonies in central Europe and both eusocial and communal colonies in southern Greece. Indirect evidence suggests that some worker-brood females are actually gynes. A distinctly bimodal size distribution among foundresses in 1998, the lower size peak being close to the modal body size of workers from 1997, suggests that large worker-brood females overwinter and return to the aggregation as eusocial foundresses. Other first-brood females remain in the maternal nest as workers, although few can be classified as classical, sterile altruists. Only 17% of older, healthy workers are sterile (i.e. had ovarian development scores ≤ 0.1), whereas about 83% are reproductive, exhibiting at least one 1/4-developed oocyte. About 57% of older workers have at least one fully or 3/4 developed oocyte, signifying that they are ready or almost ready to lay. Sterile workers exhibit greater total wear (combined mandibular and wing wear) scores than reproductive workers, suggesting that they are older, have higher activity rates, or both.

Social justice is embraced as a central mission of social work, yet how the profession defines it lacks clear and common understanding. This qualitative study explored the concept of social justice as perceived and applied by social workers in diverse practice settings. Focus-group participants were asked five primary open-ended questions. Key phrases and terms were identified and grouped into four themes: variation in meaning of social justice, confronting injustices, practice reality, and professional responsibility. The findings suggest that social justice as understood and practiced in the field is compatible with theoretical conceptions in the literature, but a predominant understanding remains lacking.

The 45 Disney animated feature films produced between 1937 and 2006 were analysed for representations of child maltreatment and child maltreatment interventions according to criteria set out in the US National Incidence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect. Although there are 263 maltreated child characters in 30 of the 45 films, they seldom show formal interventionists at work. The types of resolutions and interventions to child maltreatment in the films were analysed and contrasted with the single depiction of a social worker. The actions of this character were assessed according to national codes of ethics and standards for social worker interventions and decision making. Implications are drawn for the profession of social work and the findings are discussed within the context of previously published analyses of media representations of social workers.

Sweat bees are one of the most socially polymorphic lineages on the planet. In obligately eusocial species, newly enclosed females may become either queens or workers, depending on the environmental and social circumstances of the nest into which they emerge. In socially polymorphic species, females also have the option of nesting solitarily, founding a nest and raising future reproductives alone, without the help of other adult females. Halictus ligatus is a widespread Nearctic, ground-nesting sweat bee. It has been particularly well studied in Ontario, where detailed studies have described it as obligately eusocial. Here we report evidence that the flexibility of female H. ligatus actually extends to expressing behaviour more typical of socially polymorphic species, those in which some individuals reproduce solitarily. In a population in southern Ontario, black wasps (Astata sp.) emerged from the soil beneath the nesting aggregation and proceeded to excavate their own nesting tunnels, dislocating many H. ligatus nest entrances. Young workers whose natal nests were destroyed by the wasp activity constructed new nests, so under very specific circumstances, it is possible for potential altruists to nest solitarily.

Abstract Social work has been a part of the essential workforce historically and throughout the COVID‐19 pandemic, yet lack recognition. This work explores the experiences and invisibility of social workers within the pandemic response. Data are drawn from a large cross‐sectional survey of US‐based social worker from June to August of 2020. A summative content analysis of responses to the question ‘What do you wish people knew about social work during the COVID‐19 pandemic’ was undertaken. Participants (n?=?515) were majority white (72.1%) and female (90.8%). Seven coding categories were subsequently collapsed into three domains: (1) meeting basic needs, (2) well‐being (emotional distress and dual role) and (3) professional invisibility (workplace equals, physical safety, professional invisibility and organisational invisibility). Meeting social needs requires broad‐based policies that strengthen the health and social safety net. Social workers have and will continue to play a critical role in the response, and recovery from COVID‐19. Organisational and governmental policies must expand to increase the visibility and responsiveness to the needs of social care providers.
